ELBOW DYSPLASIA
Elbow dysplasia is a collective noun for several
conditions (OCD, LPA en LPC) that affect the elbow joint.
These conditions can develop from an age of 5 months. A possible cause is asynchronous growth of the bones, caused
by obesity or overburdening the joints. It can be worsened by having too much calcium in the food. It’s mostly the
cartilage in the elbow joint that is affected. This causes (
osteoarthritis), which can be very painful.
The Chinese herbal formula Drynaria is used in combination with Rejoint for the treatment of elbow dysplasia. Your
pet will function normally again for the most part and surgery can be prevented. In the past it was standard treatment
to have surgery in cases of Elbow Dysplasia. Many vets have changed their mind about this, because the operation can
influence the degree of bone overgrowth negatively when the dog ages.
Drynaria/ Rejoint helps prevent bone overgrowth, produces new cartilage, is an
analgesic, it’s also anti-inflammatory, strengthens bones and ligaments and it improves blood circulation. The
development of new cartilage takes 1-2 months. The analgesic and and anti-inflammatory effect can be seen within
1 – 2 days. When you decide to use Drynaria/ Rejoint, then you have to use it for at least 3 months for maximum effect.
Drynaria in combination with Rejoint is a very good alternative for corticosteroids, Prednison and pain
killers, like Rimadyl, Metacam, Cortafen, Brufen, Ketafen. It has no side effects. Therefore, it can be
given over a long period of time.
Symptoms: bone degeneration (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), having problems getting up,
painful muscles and joints, pain when walking, swollen joints, development of joint fluids, acute joint infection

More information on elbow dysplasia
The elbow joint is a hinge-joint between the humerus(a) on one side and the radius (b) and the
ulna (c) on the other side. The areas of bone, which form the actual joint, are covered with
cartilage. The space between the surfaces of the joints is filled with a lubricant (Synovia) which
plays a role in feeding the cartilage.
d. Processus Anconeus, orange part (PA, = part of the elbow joint)
e. Processus Coronoideus, green part, (PC, = part of the elbow joint)
Elbow dysplasia is a collective noun for next conditions:
OCD (Osteochondrosis Dissecans)
LPA (Los Processus Anconeus)
LPC (Los Processus Coronoideus)
OCD
This type occurs mainly in bigger, fast growing breeds with pups between four and twelve months of age. OCD is a
disease of the cartilage of the joint, usually accompanied with inflammation of the bone underneath. The symptoms
are a slowly increased limping, shortening of the length of steps forward, development of getting cripple, the step
forwards is getting shorter, overburdening of the joint and turning the leg outward.
Under a microscope the damage is even clearer. It’s easy to spot the damages under a microscope. The cartilage layer
is the darker layer on top: it is clear that some of the cartilage is broken. Marked red is the clearly visible
inflammation of the bone.
LPA (orange part of elbow joint)
This occurs mostly in larger breeds, although nowadays, it is also seen in the Dachshund and Bassets.
During ossification the cartilage degenerates, due to a abnormal growth process. The Processus Anconeus will not
develop properly and will break off. Most of the time, the loose piece of bone was removed by a vet, but nowadays
that is not common practice anymore. When removing part of the joint, the body will react by “filling in” that part
again thus causing bone deformation. This is a painful an irreversible process. Nowadays, instead of an operation, one
chooses to let the joint develop as best as possible, with the aid of natural formulas.
LPC (green part of elbow joint)
Same as LPA.
