This condition in cats is very difficult to cure. It looks like some sort of eczema on the lips, with small ulcers. Usually visible on the edge of the upper lip, or even on the lower lip. Eosinophilic granuloma is actually a disturbance of the eosinophils. Eosinophilia is not a disease, but can be a reaction to a disease. An increase in the number of eosinophilic granulocytes in the blood is usually indicative of an adequate reaction to abnormal cells, parasites or substances that cause an allergic reaction. When the granulocytes have been formed in the bone marrow, these cells end up in the circulation. They enter bodily tissues within a few hours. When a foreign substance enters the body, the granulocytes will trace it. The granulocytes will release toxic substances, thus destroying the parasites or deviant cells. When the eosinophils are disturbed, these cells can start growing. This is referred to as eosinophilic granuloma. The growths are usually located on the upper lip.
They can also be found in other locations, like the roof of the mouth, feet, abdomen.

Microscopic examination can be used to check for disturbances. It will show the purple granulate forms, see photo.

The disturbance of the eosinophils can occur as a result of an allergic reaction. It is important to check your pet’s surroundings. Usually a flea allergy is suspected.
Eosinophilic granuloma can be treated with Sical. This treatment is an alternative for Prednison or antibiotics that Western medicine usually prescribed. It has no side effects. This means that it can be used for longer periods of time.
